Summary of Day 1 Boston to Salem

View from the cockpit.

We had good intensions of setting out early so that we could sail to Gloucester on a Flotilla with others from Constitution Marina. However, given that we had to bring the head sail back over and we had not yet put provisions on the boat we decided to take things easier, and it is a vacation.

By 11am we disembarked. Destination was still unclear. At times we discussed Scituate, Gloucester, Provincetown, Salem, but we had no idea. We motored out of the harbor and by noon got the sails out. Winds were light 7-8 knots true straight out of the east. This meant that we couldn't do one shot along the north shore but instead had to tack some to make progress. By about 2pm we had both had cockpit naps - don't read more into it than the words say - and were getting into vacation mode. Earlier Yolande had tried calling Salem water taxi to get a reservation without a response. When I asked her again if she would call she answered "No". Clearly she is in to her non business, vacation mode. By this I mean, she clearly is of the attitude, if they don't have a mooring we can anchor and deal with it when we get there.

As we were sailing over we watched the coastgaurd board a 50 foot red hulled sailboat. It looked like they took something away from the occupants, but let them go. For one moment we thought they were heading our way. Yolande was disappointed when they turned and headed back to Boston - "that would have been a good story for the blog if we had been boarded".

As we tacked we kept gingerly looking at the sail to see if we could figure out why it keeps ripping at the same height. So after making a perfect landing on a mooring ball, Yolande went up the mast - see picture beneath. This was her first time. As she was up there she noticed that there was a piece of zip tie on the spreader in a perfect position to damage the sail. We had previously used zip ties to hold up the radar reflectors. Now that it is removed we will see what happens. Of course if we get no further damage we won't be able to conclude that the zip tie was the culprit - but you science geeks out there, no we are not performing a positive control.

We walked into the Restaurant 62, managed to get two seats at the bar and had some nice appetizers. We recommend this restaurant highly, its our favorite in Salem. Then we went back to the boat, watched episode 1 of "Friday Night Lights" and then off to sleep.

Where do we go today? No idea. But thats your job. I checked the comment box and it is working.
